Maryland / Tizzard Island is in

The seagrass population at Tizzard Island is relatively new. Zostera marina disappeared from this area in the 1930’s (waisting disease) and only began to recolonize the study site in 1997 (left photo – southeastern shoreline). Presently, the seagrass bed is extensive and healthy but the deeper edge is being negatively impacted by clam dredging (right photo). We are tracking the recovery of the disturbed seagrass area along one of the SeagrassNet transects.
